Today, it’s simply not enough to do one thing. actors double up as musicians. and musicians also model, paint and star in historical Chinese war epics. So to help you find direction in our mad, multi-tasking world, we create this blend of Indian classical and world genres like blues/funk/rock to revitalise your mind body and soul. Packed with 6 talented musicians with varied backgrounds we present "Raagleela"
*Is your stage name trademarked?
NO
*Have you registered your songs for copyright protection with the copyright Office?
NO
*What is your music background? Tell your story in a short and concise manner.
Having met at Hans raj college, five of our founding members (We recently changed bass players) decided to form a fusion project to compete in the college fest circuit. We got Sarthak Pahwa on board, to add another Indian element (besides the Hindustani classical vocal) to our sound. Each of us had very different tastes in music, but we were very open to experimentation and listening to what each person did in the jam room. We quickly composed around 6 tunes in a matter of weeks, and knew right off the bat that we had something special here. In the past 3 years, we've played close to a 100 live shows, released 3 singles, underwent a lineup change, and now, we are ready to record our debut full album.
*Why do you want to record and release your own music? (Be very honest.)
Having grown up in the age of the internet(and also, in the country where Bollywood music reigns supreme), we haven't really experienced dealings with a big music label. So,one can't answer this question objectively, without knowing both sides of the coin.
We suspect that having a label puts your material out there much faster, and helps one get more live shows. This is invaluable in building a large fan base. However, these labels can also be intrusive, and dictate your creative decisions.
We have recorded and released our own music up till now, and it has been a very rewarding process, albeit a little frustrating. While we have had all the time and creative control to make what we liked best,it has been hard to get our music out there. Social networking websites are our only channel of delivery, besides friends in the local music scene. We hope to get better at marketing our music better as time goes on.
*Who is your fan/customer? (Analyze this question thoroughly.)
For us, our average listener is a person who likes to hear something fresh; music that moves him/her emotionally. He/she is not someone who is looking for a light tune to dance to, or someone who wants background music in a cafe. A fan could be of any age, but someone who cares about, and recognizes honest music that is made from the heart. Our music demands complete attention. However, this is not to say that live performances have to be serious and dull. An ideal live listener comes to our show with an open mind, and is one for an immersive experience that will envelope the senses.
We recognize that the new model for a professional band involves very little money from album sales(owing to the internet), but with a larger focus on life performance. This may change, however, as people become more aware of indie music, and start more music.
*What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?
In most of our compositions, a central theme is an intense emotion; be it love, longing, anger, celebration or happiness. We like to explore a particular emotion lyrically, musically, and eventually reach a crescendo of sound to bring it all together.
*Do you write your own songs?
Yes.
*Who are your musical influences?
Prateek (our vocalist) comes from a classical Hindustani vocal background, and started listening to all kinds of music when he moved to Delhi from Benaras. Other members' influences range from old school 70's rock and roll, blues, jazz, indian folk music, to psychedelia, metal and electronic music. That's a key element to our sound; it's a whole range of influences coming together in a piece of music, that grows organically in the jam room.
It'll be a futile exercise to list all our favourite artists here.
*How do you describe your music to people? (This is not a short answer.)
We like to say world fusion. That usually ends that conversation :P
For people who want to know more, we describe what each person in the band does, and what our influences are. We feel that ours is organic, honest music and we sound like nothing else out there.
*Do you have any personal contacts in the music business?
We have managed to make some good friends in the music scene, and feel a sense of community among peer bands and local organisers. We don't know people from labels or big management companies.
*Are you looking for an independent label deal or a major label deal? (Why?)
Again, both have pros and cons. We can't really take a stand without exploring more about what these options entail.
A sense of community, honestly towards the music, flexibility and creative control are very important to us. These traits are more often found in independent labels, though a major label may pass this test also.
*What live performance experience have you had? (Any industry showcases?
We have played all over the country, over the past 3 years. Starting out from the DU college fest circuit, we also played most large college fests in the country. We have also played some corporate shows and a lot of festivals.
*How did you sell your CD’s/Audio Files? (Consignment? Live sales? iTunes? CD Baby? Amazon.com? Tunecore? Through traditional distributors/stores?)
We haven't started selling our music yet. Whatever singles we have released, have been given away for free.
We plan to record our album next year, and will probably use all digital avenues to get our music out there.
*Are you financially able to fund the costs of establishing your career? (Are you in debt?)
Most of us just got out of college, and looking at avenues to start making money. 3 members are currently working other jobs besides playing in the band.
*if we Indie music scene create a short video about your Band ! are you up for it ?
Definitely
